Platinum output dives 13% in 2012

$200m agreement signed for Maddhapara rock mine

Finance minister hints at open-pit coal mining despite risks
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith has said the government might go for open-pit coal mining in the northern region, despite the risks of dislocation of thousands of people and damages of homesteads and farmlands involved.
The government is likely to decide the coal extraction method before its five-year tenure ends early next year.

Matia opposes open-pit coalmining in northwest
Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury has opined that open-pit coalmining in the country’s northwestern region is not possible as it may cause a huge displacement.
