Installation of 100 MW Power Plant Inaugurated in Keraniganj

Wednesday, 07.28.2010, 08:53pm (GMT)

Dhaka, July 28: The foundation laying ceremony of a 100 MW power plant was held in Keraniganj on Wednesday (July 28). Bangladeshi Power Pac Company in collaboration with Malaysian Mutiara Company is establishing the power plant, which will start generation from April 2011.

State Minister for Environment and Forest Dr Hasan Mahmud was present as special guest at the foundation laying ceremony.

In his speech, he said that Bangladesh would soon turn into a power surplus country. “The government has announced the roadmap for power generation. If everything goes in the right direction, Bangladesh will become a power surplus country in the near future,” he said.

He mentioned that the Awami League government during its previous tenure had increased power generation from 600 MW to 4,000 MW.

He said the BNP-Jamaat government during their five-year rule had “failed to produce” even an additional 1 MW of electricity, rather the production was reduced.

Hasan Mahmud said: “Power generation is not a matter of one day. It is not that easy that one will just touch a switch and electricity production will start.”

He said power generation is a time consuming matter. Since assuming power, the present government has put utmost importance on power generation.

In this regard, he said the government has omitted several procedures for installation of power plants. The government opted for rental basis quick power plant to mitigate the sufferings of the people.
