Safety Maintaining Work Starts at Barapukuria Coal Mine

Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Ltd has started safety maintaining work in the mine to restart its commercial production soon as per recommendation of two British and Chinese experts.“The experts suggested that we have to start safety maintaining work at Barapukuria to stop further accident, a Petrobangla official said and adding, “We have started the job and monitoring every moment’s situation.”

 

Mining Resumes at Barapukuria

Barapukuria coal production resumed on Sunday (Aug 15), as disagreement between the Chinese contractor and its British consultant over explosives usage was resolved. Managing director of the Barapukuria Coal Mining Company Limited (BCMCL) Mohammad Quamruzzaman told newsmen that the Bangladeshi workers had joined work on Friday.

Land subsidence victims on Tuesday (Aug 10) withdrew their indefinite siege to the only coal mine company of Bangladesh, Barapukuria coalmine company, following assurance from the authorities of providing them with compensation before the upcoming Eid. The villagers around Barapukuria Coal Mine Company Ltd (BCMCL) laid siege to the company on Monday demanding compensation for subsidence caused by the underground mining.

Open Pit Mining of Coal Opposed

Speakers at a seminar in the city have opposed open pit mining of coal arguing that it will cause environmental hazards. They were speaking at the seminar titled ‘Energy Resources, Power Crisis and Energy Security: Policy, Treaty, Organization and Ownership’ organised by National Oil, Gas, Power, Mineral Resources and Port Protection Committee at Moitri auditorium in city’s Purana Paltan on Tuesday (Aug 3).

Dhaka University Geology Department Professor Dr Badrul Imam has opined that Underground Coal Gasification (UCG) can be a good alternative source of gas while the country is plunged into a deep gas crisis.He made the opinion at a seminar titled ‘Prospects of coal gasification’, held at the seminar hall of Petrobangla at Petrocenter in the city on Sunday.

Villagers withdraw Barapukuria coal mine besiege programme

The villagers around Barapukuria Coal Mine Company Limited (BCMCL) on July 20 called off their besieged programme which began on July 19 demanding compensation and rehabilitation for subsidence due to underground mining. The villagers withdrew their programme after a fruitful meeting between the leaders of the affected villagers and the coalmine authorities on Monday midnight.

Thousands of villagers around Barapukuria Coal Mine Company Limited (BCMCL) on July 19 besieged the company in Dinajpur and staged demonstration demanding compensation and rehabilitation for subsidence due to underground mining.People from nearly 2600 families around the BCMCL, who have been facing difficulties due to the subsidence, also put barricade on the rail track by felling trees at about 3:00pm, halting the rail communications between Rajshahi and Khulna.
