Bangladesh holds talk with Russia on 3rd contract of Rooppur NPP

The visiting Bangladesh delegation held discussions with their Russian counterpart on the proposed third contract for the preparatory phase of Rooppur nuclear power plant, in Belorussia.

Bangladesh side was represented by officials and experts from Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission and the Ministry of Science and Technology .On the other hand Russian side was represented by a delegation from “NIAEP”-“ASE,” sister concern of Russian state atomic energy corporation – ROSATOM.

Under the third contract, construction and installations works are required to be performed during the preparatory phase.

Earlier two contracts were signed in June and October of the current year for feasibility study and engineering design.

Bangladesh side stressed that the density of the population in the country must be taken into account when designing nuclear power plant and safety systems.

Bangladesh delegation is now visiting Belorussia’s first-ever under-construction nuclear power plant site to have practical experience and knowledge about the nature and volume of works undertaken during the preparatory stage.

“Belarus is in a similar position with us,” said Dr. Mohammad Shawkat Akbar, Project Director of Rooppur NPP, “that is why we made the visit, not to Russia, but to Belorussia’s Ostrovets plant.”

“For Belorussia, as well as for us, this is the first experience in construction of nuclear power plant. The experience of Belarus is extremely important to us. We plan to study and analyze all the nuances and challenges Belarusian colleagues faced during preparatory phase,” he said.
