Russian ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander A. Nikolaev said that all political parties in Bangladesh support the construction of Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant.
‘Even, BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia also has support over the project.’
The outgoing envoy made this comment at a program, organized by Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB), at National Press Club in city on Sunday noon.
According to Nikolaev, Khaleda Zia, in a meeting three years ago, said that BNP took initiatives in building Rooppur nuclear power plant.
‘It means BNP and Khaleda Zia support the power plant,’ he added.
He further said that people, who oppose the project, are ignorant about the matter. ‘If they know properly about the plant, their fear will be gone.’
‘Relations between Bangladesh and Russia are based on development in energy sector, not terrorism,’ he remarked.
To a question, the envoy replied that officials from Bangladesh Armed Forces department have shown their interest in purchasing more arms from Russia.
‘But it is an issue to be discussed between the two governments.’
‘Russia will consider the matter if they get any formal letter from Bangladesh government in purchasing arms,’ he added.
DCAB president Angur Nahar Monty and general secretary Pantha Rahman, among others, were present at the meeting.
