Bangladesh Underscores Regional Cooperation In Power And Energy Sector: Nasrul

Bangladesh stressed more on regional cooperation in power and energy sector, said State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid.

“We are already importing electricity from India, adopted measures of importing electricity from Nepal and are in the process of signing a MoU to import electricity from Bhutan in the future is underway,” he said at the 3rd meeting of the BIMSTEC energy ministers.

Nasrul Hamid attended the meeting virtually on Wednesday.

“Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) has created a link between South Asia and Southeast Asia. We can establish a peaceful and prosperous Bay of Bengal through development and proper use of natural and human resources,” said the state minister.

The meeting was presided over by Pampha Bhusal, energy, water resource and irrigation minister of Nepal, while ministers from Bhutan, India, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand also spoke.

Addressing the meeting, Nasrul Hamid said that Bangladesh puts the highest importance on regional cooperation on power and energy.

“We have already been importing electricity from India and initiated the process to import electricity from Nepal and Bhutan also,” he added.

The state minister said some regions of the world have been able to achieve their economic development through win-win cooperation and mutual respect.

“We too will be able to overcome the natural disasters, poverty and other challenges of the region through regional cooperation. For that we have to work together to turn challenges into opportunities,” he added.

He emphasised the need for efficient and quality power management and expansion of renewable energy in the region to protect the environment.
