Europe faced the prospect of a radiation disaster on Thursday when a Russian-occupied nuclear plant was disconnected from Ukraine’s power grid, President Volodomyr Zelensky has said. It was only due to back-up electricity kicking in that the Zaporizhzhia plant was able to operate safely, he added. Fires had earlier damaged overhead power lines, cutting the plant off. There is growing concern over fighting near the complex, which is the largest... »
Amidst the current global energy crisis, nuclear power has the potential to play a significant role in helping countries to securely transition to energy systems dominated by renewables, according to a new special report by the International Energy Agency (IEA) released late last month. Moreover, the climate crisis and the globally agreed targets of reaching net zero emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050 require a rapid and complete decarbonisation of... »
Concreting of the inner containment dome of Unit 1 has been completed at the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant (RNPP) recently. Over 3200 cubic meters of concrete was laid in the structure of more than 17.6 meters high with diameter of 42.8 meters at the base. The works were performed by RosSEM Trust , part of Rosatom Engineering Division. “Concreting of inner containment dome is the final stage of construction of... »
Inner Containment(IC) dome metal structures have been installed in the reactor building of Power Unit 2 of the Rooppur NPP, recently. The upper portion of the dome 35.7 m in diameter and weighing 194 tonnes was placed in its design position at an elevation of 51.7 m; the construction height has now reached 60.5 m. “IC dome installation is one of the 2022 milestones. We performed similar works at Power... »
The Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Bangladesh Atomic Energy Commission (BAEC) for technological cooperation in nuclear research and development. A signing ceremony was held today at the BAEC headquarters in Dhaka, Bangladesh. It was attended by KAERI Director Won-seok Park, BAEC Chairman Mohammad Azizul Haque and Ambassador of the Republic of Korea to Bangladesh Jang-geun Lee. Under the MoU, the main... »
A renewed interest in nuclear power is under way. With the climate crisis already pressuring countries to depend less on fossil fuels, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has now created another reason for governments to speed up their search for alternative energy sources. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) recently issued its latest report warning the planet is left with a small window to prevent the worst effects of climate... »
When it was attacked by Russian forces, Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant shifted to center stage. But while nuclear energy is important to Ukraine, the country still gets 70% of its power from fossil fuels. How important is nuclear energy to the electricity supply in Ukraine? After the attack on the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant in south-eastern Ukraine by Russian forces on Friday night, it became clear that nuclear power... »
European scientists say they have made a major breakthrough in their quest to develop practical nuclear fusion – the energy process that powers the stars. The UK-based JET laboratory has smashed its own world record for the amount of energy it can extract by squeezing together two forms of hydrogen. If nuclear fusion can be successfully recreated on Earth it holds out the potential of virtually unlimited supplies of low-carbon,... »
Rosatom’s thematic week titled “Breakthrough Technologies for a Sustainable Future” ended on January 24 at the Russia’s Expo 2020 pavilion in Dubai. A total of 18 sessions were dedicated to the role of advanced technologies in achieving a sustainable future and solving the most pressing challenges of our time. In one of the sessions “Path to net-zero: challenges and practical steps,” dedicated to decarbonization – an important aspect of sustainable... »
The country’s dream for nuclear energy has a long history and the first steps of realising that dream were taken by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Later, it has been taken forward by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. The nuclear power plant, which has been constructed with the technical and financial help of Russia, is already visible as the first unit of the Reactor Pressure Vessel was installed... »
