Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina yesterday inaugurated four power generation and two transmission projects through a videoconferencing from Gono Bhaban. The power generation projects are furnace oil-fired 52.20MW Natore plant, 102MW Gagnagar plant in Narayanganj, 52.50MW Kathpatti plant in Munshiganj and gas-fired 108MW Ghorashal plant in Narsingdi. The transmission projects are 54km long 400KV transmission line from Meghnaghat to Aminbazar of Savar and 132/33KV transmission substation at Lalbagh in the capital.
Bangladesh Finance Minister AMA Muhith has rejected the World Bank’s advice to cut subsidies for the power and energy sectors. Muhith is heading the 15-member Bangladesh delegation at the WB-IMF Spring Meetings in the US capital. The Cabinet Purchase Committee approved on Wednesday five procurement proposals, including awarding contract for the land development of 1320 MW Rampal phase-II coal-fired power plant to a  firm run by the Bangladesh Army.  A meeting of the committee, held with Industries Minister Amir Hossain Amu in the chair, gave the nod to the proposals, placed by different ministries, according to a news agency.

Standing committee on non-concessional loans has rejected funding proposals made by three international agencies including World Bank for 225 megawatt combined cycle power plant in Sirajganj district. The committee argued that the proposals could not be accepted as they were tagged with “hard conditions and high interest rates,” said official sources. Bangladesh saturday generated 7,437 megawatts of electricity, the highest in the country’s history, officials said.
