EB Reporter

Chevron Bangladesh held a formal ceremony to mark the end of Rotaplast International’s mission to Sylhet, where 78 patients living near Chevron’s Jalalabad gas-plant – mostly children – received life-changing reconstructive surgeries to correct cleft-lip, cleft-palate and other facial deformities. The ten-day mission was sponsored by Chevron, and was conducted in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Jalalabad and Sylhet Women’s Medical College & Hospital.
Thanking Rotaplast, the Sylhet Deputy Commissioner, Mohammad Shahidul Islam said, “These children born with cleft-palate deformities will now get a chance to live normal lives made possible by Chevron’s generous contribution, and the tireless work of the volunteers of Rotary Club of Jalalabad and Sylhet Women’s Medical College & Hospital.” According to the Principal of Sylhet Women’s Medical College & Hospital, Professor Dr. Md. Rezaul Karim, “Aside from the monumental difference these surgeries have made in the lives of these children, the Rotaplast mission also helped in building the capacity of our own medical team, who were privileged to be a part of it.” Also, In-Country Coordinator of this mission, the Rotary Club’s Past District Governor (PDG) Dr. Monzurul Haque Chowdhury said, “This program has been given a brand new lease on life to these 78 children and their families, and for that, everyone involved in this successful mission will always be in their thoughts and prayers.”
In his remarks, Chevron Bangladesh External Affairs Director, Naser Ahmed said, “We are privileged of our partnership with the Rotary Club of Jalalabad and Sylhet Women’s Medical College & Hospital, and are deeply indebted to Rotaplast for this mission that has transformed the lives of 78 children and their families.” Co-Founder and Medical Director of Rotaplast International, Angelo Capozzi, M.D., said, “Our first mission to Sylhet was a huge success. We helped many children, and in all sincerity, it was made possible by our partnership with Chevron. Hopefully, we can repeat the mission in 2015.”
Rotaplast International is a non-profit, humanitarian organization, which provides free reconstructive operations and treatment for children in need worldwide. Co-founded in 1992 as a world community service project of the Rotary Club of San Francisco, Rotaplast’s goal is to eliminate the incidence of untreated cleft lips and palates in children across the world by the year 2025. 19 medical and non-medical volunteers took part in this particular mission to Sylhet. The team included reconstructive plastic surgeons, anesthesiologists, pediatricians and nurses, all from the United States, Australia, and the Netherlands, working on a voluntary basis. Chevron Bangladesh’s association with the organization began last year, when it sponsored its mission to Chittagong.
