ECNEC approves 15 projects involving Tk 42.53 billion

The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) approved 15 development projects Tuesday involving Tk 42.53 billion.

Presided over by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, the meeting was held at the Planning Commission in Dhaka.

Emerging from the meeting, Planning Commission Member Hedayetullah Al Mamun said out of the total cost for the 15 projects, Tk 31.23 billion will come from the government exchequer and the remaining Tk 11.30 billion will come as project assistance.

Among the projects, a Tk 16.58 billion project aimed at reforming Bangladesh’s secondary education sector with special emphasis on improved quality education has been approved.

Under the “Secondary Education Sector Investment Programmes”, the Education Ministry would implement the project in line with the government’s 10-year national education policy.

Various activities including management efficiency improvement, curriculum review, infrastructural development, ICT based teaching and learning and poor and unprivileged students’ stipend programme have been incorporated in the project.

Asian Development Bank will provide Tk 7.20 billion for the four-year project scheduled to be commenced from January, 2014.

ECNEC approved another project worth Tk 1.73 billion for installing and operating pre-paid metres in Lalbag, Bashabo, Maniknagar, Bongshal, Jurain and East Narayanganj area under Dhaka Power Distribution Company Ltd (DPDC) on pilot basis.

Under the project, 144,500 pre-paid meters would be installed. The project would ensure 100 per cent power sector revenue earning in the concerned areas of Dhaka and Narayanganj. It would also help improve quality customer service.

The other projects approved at the meeting include Procurement of 10 BG diesel electric locomotives; Construction of BAFA Bangabandhu Complex, Jessore; Construction of Tatthya Bhaban; technology transfer at upazilla level for farmers’ training; Production, storage and distribution of rice, wheat and jute seed at farmer’s level; Removal of water logging from Vabodaho and adjacent areas of Jessore district; and construction of new food godowns with a capacity of storing 0.105 million tonnes of food grains.

Besides, construction of fire service and civil defence stations at 78 Upazilla/places of the country; Development of Naogaon-Bodolgachhi-Patnitola road and construction of Mahadevpur and Bodolgachhi bridge; Ground water investigation and development of deep ground water source in urban and rural areas in Bangladesh; Construction of 668 meter pre-stressed girder bridge with RCC desk over Boro Baliatoli Andharmanik river on Kalapara-Bliatoli-Gangamoti Road under Kolapara Upazilla of Patuakhali District; Bhutia Beel and Bornal-Salimpur-Kolabasukhali of Khulna flood control and drainage and Construction of a 4-lane fly-over at Vulta of Dhaka-Sylhet Highway projects were endorsed at the ECNEC meeting.

ECNEC members including Finance Minister AMA Muhith, Planning Minister AK Khandker, Agriculture Minister Matia Chowdhury, concerned ministers, Advisers to the Prime Minister, Members of the Planning Commission, Secretaries and officials concerned were present at the meeting.
