Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) has fixed hearing on power-tariff hike between March 4 and March 6 as per proposals submitted by five distribution companies for fresh raise in electricity rates ranging between 8.57 percent and 23.50 percent.
The BERC took the decision to hold hearing on tariff hike during a meeting on 23th February with BERC Chairman AR Rahman in the chair.
An official of BERC confirmed that they received fresh proposals from last week.
five distribution companies proposals, Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB) has sought power tariff hike to 15.50 percent or TK 0.79 per unit of electricity from Tk 5.08 an average.
The Dhaka Power Distribution Company (DPDC) has sought tariff hike to 23.50 percent or Tk 1.10 from Tk 5.53 per unit.
The Dhaka Electric Supply Company (DESCO) has sought electricity price increase to 15.90 percent or Tk 0.84 from Tk 5.64 per unit.
The West Zone Power Distribution Company (WZPDCO) has sought tariff raise to 8.57 percent or TK 0.77 from Tk 5.05 per unit.
The Rural Electrification Board (REB) has sought power tariff hike to 12.58 percent or Tk 0.79 per unit of electricity from Tk 4.49 per unit now.
“We have fixed the date of hearing on power-tariff hike proposals between March 4, march 5 and
March 6,” BERC officials told. He said the BERC team is now evaluating the proposals.
“You must be careful to ensure consumer affordability during power-and gas-tariff hike,” Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was quoted as telling the officials concerned when the officials raised the power-price-hike matter during the prime minister’s first office at the ministry after the formation of the new cabinet on February 6.
