Ground breaking of Rooppur NPP in the first week of October

Dhaka, 17th September, 2013: Foundation stone of nuclear power plant at Rooppur, Pabna is planned to be laid in the first week of October. This was confirmed by Sergey Kiriyenko, Head of Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation – Rosatom. Simultaneously a contract for engineering design of the plant will be signed in Dhaka.

Sergey Kiriyenko, along with a high power delegation from Rosatom will arrive Dhaka on October 2. in connection with the inauguration of construction works at the Rooppur NPP site.

Presently, survey works are underway at the project site to asses environmental impact of the plant. Reports of feasibility study and ecological research will be available by 2015.

Under a contract signed in June last NIAEP, management company of Atomstroyexport, main contractor for construction of the NPP has been delegated the responsibility of documentation.

It may be mentioned here that at the beginning of the current year Russian Federation and Bangladesh signed a number of Intergovernmental deals, including an agreement on provision of US$500 million credit by Russia to Bangladesh for the first stage of construction of Rooppur NPP. The first stage includes feasibility study and preparatory works of the NPP. The Rooppur NPP is expected to be commissioned in the beginning of 2020s.

Earlier in November 2011, Russian Federation and Bangladesh signed an intergovernmental agreement for setting up a first ever nuclear power plant in Bangladesh. Two WMWC type reactors, each of 1,000 MW capacity to be set up at Rooppur in Pabna district.
