National Committee to protest power prices hike on Mar 24

National Committee to Protect Oil and Gas, Mineral Resources, Power and Ports will hold an demonstration on Mar 24 to protest the recent hike in power prices.

The citizen’s platform Member Secretary Anu Mohammad on 14th March said a rally would be held in front of the National Press Club.

Further agitation programmes would be announced from rally, he said while speaking at an event at Mukti Bhaban, in Dhaka.

Anu Mohammad said, “Other programmes including countrywide march by foot will be announced from the Mar 24 rally to protest the government’s anti-people decision.”

After a three-day public hearing, Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) announced an average tariff hike of 6.96 percent. The new rates would come into effect this month.

BERC Chairman had said the commission decided on the tariff hike after taking into consideration the interest of all segments of consumers, but Anu Mohammad said the energy regulator was only following the ‘government’s order’.

Criticising the government, he said, prices had been hiked several times earlier, too, showing there was no long-term plan.

He also alleged the government was ‘filling the pockets of looters’ by repeatedly resorting to tariff hikes.
