August 23-25 XVI championship of Russia on fishing float rod, organised by the Russian Association of Public Associations Rosokhotrybolovsoyuz with support of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom, JSC Concern Rosenergoatom was held at the cooling reservoir of Kalinin nuclear power plant. The competition attended by 69 top athletes from 12 regions of the Russian Federation (Moscow, St. Petersburg, Voronezh, Leningrad and Smolensk, Chelyabinsk, Krasnodar and Yaroslavl regions, Bashkortostan) is the main stage of candidates selection for the national team.
Russian championships on fishing float rod are held since 2010. The competitions have already successfully passed at Novovoronezh, Rostov, Smolensk nuclear power stations. Udomlya became the fourth satellite city of nuclear power plants. Event attracted federal and international media from India, Turkey, Bangladesh. During their stay they visited Kalinin nuclear power plant, one of the fish farms located on Lake Udomlya and met CEO of Kalinin NPP Mikhail Kanyshev.
To create a positive image of nuclear power as a clean and safe industry since 2010 Russian championships on fishing float rod held at the nuclear power plant cooling ponds.
“I am glad you can personally observe that the nearly 30-year operation of the Kalinin NPP does not cause any damage to natural environment and watersystem and ecological status is maintained at a very favourable level. Kalinin NPP Fish from our lakes is delivered to Tver region and throughout the Russian Federation”, – said the director Mikhail Kalinin Kanyshev welcomed the participants and guests of the tournament.
Fishing festival in Russia has a long history. “We are very happy to be a part of this exciting event. The uniqueness of this competition on Udomlya lake is conditions, the lake is the cooling reservoir for Kalinin NPP and the temperature of water is a little bit warmer (around 24 degrees). The result is that there are a lot of food for fish and it grows much faster”. – Yuryi Radugin, “Moscow-2” team representative said.
Fishing competition was held in individual and team formats. Total catch accounted for 411 kg. At the end all fish was tested by external dosimeter laboratory station proving that there is no man-made radionuclides in it and Kalinin NPP has no impact on lake environment. The winners received trophies and prizes established by the State Corporation “Rosatom”, “Rosenergoatom” and Kalinin NPP.
Lake-cooler Udomlya, that gave the city its name, is located in the centre of Tverskoy region. The lake area is 1,000 hectares. The length of the lake south-north – 7.5 km. The greatest width from east to west – 3.2 km. The average depth of 10 m, in some areas up to 38 meters in places catching depth from 1.5 to 5.5 m in the pond next present species composition of fish: bleak, carp, bream, roach, perch, pike, catfish, pike, carp.
